Etsy Fees Explained: What You Actually Keep

Listing fees, transaction fees, payment processing — Etsy's cut is bigger than most sellers expect. A worked example with real numbers.

Etsy is one of the best places to make your first dollar selling digital products — but its fee structure surprises a lot of new sellers. Let's walk through exactly what Etsy takes, with real numbers.

The three fees

Every Etsy sale involves up to three separate fees:

  1. Listing fee: $0.20 per listing. For digital products, one listing can sell unlimited copies, but you pay $0.20 every time you create or renew it (listings auto-renew every 4 months).
  2. Transaction fee: 6.5% of the total sale price including shipping and gift wrap.
  3. Payment processing fee: 3% + $0.25 per transaction (US rate — it varies slightly by country).

Etsy Ads and offsite-ads fees only apply if you opt into advertising, so we'll leave those out.

A worked example

You sell a printable wall art bundle for $12, digital delivery (no shipping):

  • Listing fee: $0.20
  • Transaction fee: 6.5% × $12 = $0.78
  • Payment processing: 3% × $12 + $0.25 = $0.61
  • Total fees: $1.59 — about 13.3% of the sale
  • You keep: $10.41

Now the same bundle at $5:

  • Listing: $0.20, transaction: $0.33, processing: $0.40
  • Total fees: $0.93 — 18.6% of the sale
  • You keep: $4.07

Notice what happened: the flat fees ($0.20 + $0.25) punish low prices. This is why pricing your digital products above $9 matters — the math from our pricing guide isn't just psychology, it's fee survival.

The rule of thumb

For quick mental math, assume Etsy keeps roughly 12–15% of a digital product sale priced between $10–30. Price below $7 and the effective rate climbs toward 20%.

Keep more of each sale

  • Bundle products instead of selling singles — one $24 bundle beats four $6 sales on fees alone.
  • Drive your own traffic (Pinterest, TikTok) rather than relying on Etsy search — you pay the same fees either way, so free traffic is pure margin.
  • Reinvest the $0.20: renewing a listing bumps it slightly in search. For your winners, the renewal fee is cheap visibility.
